Apparatus for spraying liquids, and adapters and liquid reservoirs suitable for use therewith

Abstract

Apparatus and methods for spraying a liquid relating to a gravity-fed spray gun are disclosed. Disclosed gravity fed spray guns may comprise a body and an attachment point located at a top portion of the body; and a spray nozzle located at a front portion of the body. An apparatus may further comprise a fluid reservoir configured to contain a fluid to be sprayed through the spray nozzle, the fluid reservoir comprising a container comprising an open end; a lid for cooperative engagement with the open end of the container, the lid comprising a connector to couple the fluid reservoir to the attachment point of the spray gun and an aperture through which the fluid can flow from the fluid reservoir to the spray nozzle in use; and a filter positioned to filter the fluid before reaching the spray nozzle.

Claims

What is claimed is:

 1. An apparatus for spraying a liquid, the apparatus comprising a gravity fed spray gun comprising a body comprising a top portion, a rear portion, and a front portion; a handle extending from the rear portion of the body; an attachment point located at the top portion of the body; and a spray nozzle located at the front portion of the body; and a fluid reservoir configured to contain a fluid to be sprayed through the spray nozzle, the fluid reservoir comprising a container comprising an open end; a lid for cooperative engagement with the open end of the container, the lid comprising an aperture through which the fluid can flow from the fluid reservoir to the spray nozzle in use; and a connector tube extending from the lid and surrounding the aperture, the connector tube comprising a connector adapted to couple the fluid reservoir to the attachment point of the spray gun; and a filter positioned in the lid to filter the fluid before reaching the spray nozzle; wherein the lid is adapted to allow the fluid reservoir to be filled with paint prior to coupling the fluid reservoir to the attachment point of the spray gun.

 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the container comprises a liner that is self-supporting but also collapsible.

 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the liner comprises a rim and the lid comprises an outwardly-extending rim that sits on top of the rim of the liner when the lid is cooperatively engaged with the open end of the container.

 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the container comprises a rigid receptacle.

 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the fluid reservoir comprises a vent.

 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the container comprises a liner within a rigid receptacle, wherein the liner is self-supporting but also collapsible.

 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the liner comprises a rim and the lid comprises an outwardly-extending rim that sits on top of the rim of the liner when the lid is cooperatively engaged with the open end of the container.

 8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the receptacle comprises a framework to at least partially contain the liner.

 9. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the liner is removable from the receptacle together with the lid.

 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the filter is integral with the lid.

 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the attachment point on the spray gun is a screw thread paint pot standard attachment point; and wherein the connector on the lid is not compatible with the screw thread paint pot standard attachment point of the spray gun; the apparatus further comprising an adapter comprising a first adapter end comprising a first connector that is compatible with the connector on the lid; and a second adapter end comprising a second connector that is compatible with screw thread paint pot standard attachment point of the spray gun.

 12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fluid reservoir comprises a sealed cartridge containing paint, the cartridge being formed by cooperation of the lid and the container and comprising a sealed outlet end, the sealed outlet end comprising the aperture and the connector to couple the fluid reservoir to the attachment point on the spray gun, wherein the paint is automatically allowed to flow through the aperture of the outlet end upon attachment of the fluid reservoir to the attachment point.

 13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the container comprises markings to enable the volume of the liquid in the container to be determined.

 14. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the receptacle comprises markings to enable the volume of the liquid in the container to be determined, wherein the markings account for space between the liner and the receptacle.

 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the connector tube is provided with one or more outward extensions forming a part of the connector.

 16. An apparatus for spraying a liquid, the apparatus comprising a gravity fed spray gun comprising a body comprising a top portion, a rear portion, and a front portion; a handle extending from the rear portion of the body; an attachment point located at the top portion of the body; and a spray nozzle located at the front portion of the body; and a fluid reservoir configured to contain a fluid to be sprayed through the spray nozzle, the fluid reservoir comprising a container comprising a liner that is self-supporting but also collapsible, the container comprising an open end and; a lid for cooperative engagement with the open end of the container, the lid comprising a connector to couple the fluid reservoir to the attachment point of the spray gun and an aperture through which the fluid can flow from the fluid reservoir to the spray nozzle in use; and a filter positioned to filter the fluid before reaching the spray nozzle.

 17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the liner comprises a rim and the lid comprises an outwardly-extending rim that sits on top of the rim of the liner when the lid is cooperatively engaged with the open end of the container.

 18. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the container comprises a rigid receptacle.

 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the fluid reservoir comprises a vent.

 20. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the liner is positioned within the rigid receptacle.

 21. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the liner comprises a rim and the lid comprises an outwardly-extending rim that sits on top of the rim of the liner when the lid is cooperatively engaged with the open end of the container.

 22. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the receptacle comprises a framework to at least partially contain the liner.

 23. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the liner is removable from the receptacle together with the lid.

 24. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the filter is integral with the lid.

 25. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein a connector tube extends from the lid and surrounds the aperture, the connector tube comprising the connector to couple the fluid reservoir to the spray gun.
